Aim

The AI Journal of Surgery (AIJS) is an international, peer-reviewed, diamond open-access journal that publishes high-quality original research, review articles on current topics, technical notes, and instructive case reports in the field of general surgery — with a distinctive editorial focus on the integration of artificial intelligence into surgical science and practice. Editorials, letters to the editor, scientific letters, and manuscripts on surgical education, ethics, and the history of surgery are also welcomed.

As a surgical journal, AIJS covers all subspecialties of surgery. Its target audience includes scholars, practitioners, specialists, residents, and students across every surgical discipline, as well as engineers and data scientists working at the intersection of surgery and AI.

AIJS exists to accelerate the dissemination of surgical knowledge by combining the rigor of traditional scientific publishing with the speed and consistency of AI-powered editorial processes — while retaining a human Editor-in-Chief as the final publication authority.

Publisher & Institutional Umbrella

AIJS is published under the scientific umbrella of the Turkish Surgical Society (Türk Cerrahi Derneği — TCD), the national professional body of general surgeons in Türkiye and the publisher of the long-standing Turkish Journal of Surgery. AIJS operates as an independent, English-language, AI-managed sister publication of that tradition, dedicated specifically to surgery in the era of artificial intelligence.

All expenses of the journal are covered by the publisher and its supporting institutions. Processing and publication are free of charge. No article processing charges (APCs), submission fees, or subscription fees are requested from authors or readers at any point.

Editorial Standards

The editorial and publication processes of AIJS are shaped in accordance with the guidelines of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), World Association of Medical Editors (WAME), Council of Science Editors (CSE), Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), European Association of Science Editors (EASE), and the National Information Standards Organization (NISO). The journal is in conformity with the Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing.

Open Access Policy

AIJS provides immediate open access to all its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. Our open-access policy is based on the rules of the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI): readers may freely read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles, crawl them for indexing, and pass them as data to software — subject only to proper attribution.

Creative Commons License

All content is published under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0) license, which permits third parties to copy, distribute, and reuse the content for non-commercial purposes by giving appropriate credit to the author and the original work. Authors retain copyright of their work; commercial rights are transferred to the publisher upon acceptance.
